The Suited Monk is a practical philosophy created by Raf Adams. It gives ordinary language to a human pattern: we live an outer life and an inner life at the same time, and a Gap forms between them. The work is to close that Gap so success and inner peace are no longer opposites.
Raf Adams developed this language from his own life across Belgium, China, Spain, and Australia, then found the same journey described by thinkers across cultures and centuries. The language is new. The journey is old.
What is the Suited Monk?
The Suited Monk is a secular framework for integrated living. It does not ask you to believe a religion, leave your career, or choose between achievement and peace. It names three parts of every person (the Suit, the Monk, and the Gap) and offers a visual map of life called the Life Journey Model.
It has been taught since about 2009 through books, workshops, coaching, and Project Peace, an Australian not-for-profit that shares the same methodology more widely.
What is the Suit?
The Suit is your outer world. It is your roles, career, image, achievements, and the way you show up for other people. It includes every situational role you play: parent, partner, friend, leader, colleague.
The Suit is not a problem. It helps you function, build, and contribute. The problem begins only when the Suit becomes the whole of you, and the inner world goes quiet.
What is the Monk?
The Monk is your inner world. It is your authentic self: values, intuition, deeper knowing, and the quieter truth of what is right for you.
It is not about meditation retreats or any religion. You were born as your Monk. As life progressed, the outer world grew louder and that connection often faded. The Monk did not disappear. It was buried.
When the Suit is fed by the Monk, outer behaviour stays congruent. When it is not, life can look successful and still feel empty.
What is the Gap?
The Gap is the distance between the Suit and the Monk. Between the life you are living and the life that is true to who you actually are. Between outer success and inner alignment.
In this philosophy, much of what people call stress, anxiety, frustration, shame, emptiness, loneliness, or the sense of performing a life rather than living one is a Gap phenomenon. The wider the Gap, the heavier life feels.
The Gap is not a personal failure. It is a signal. Naming it accurately is the first useful step.
The three principles (in order)
The Suited Monk works in a fixed order. The sequence matters.
- Live a No-Gap life. Empty the Gap through awareness and healing first. Nothing built on an unaddressed Gap is stable.
- Expand your Monk. Once the Gap is clearing, let the authentic self lead.
- Maximise your Suit. Outer power, influence, and abundance follow more cleanly when the Suit is fed by the Monk rather than by the Gap.
Trying to fix performance first usually builds a bigger performance of a life, not a more fulfilling one.
The Life Journey Model
The Life Journey Model is the visual map of this philosophy. It shows two arcs across a human life: an outer journey (the Suit) and an inner journey (the Monk), with the Gap between them. It also describes five stages: Living in the Suit, The Gap, Turning Inward, Alignment, and Fulfilment, Love and Flow.
Who created it?
Raf Adams is a practical philosopher, author, speaker, and coach. Belgian-born, he has lived and worked in China and Spain and is now based in Sydney, Australia. He created the Suited Monk philosophy from lived experience, then wrote it into books including The Suited Monk (WOW! Books, 2012/2013) and Suited Monk Leadership with Mike J. Thompson (2014).
